A Wild Flowerbed
Wildflowers and wildflower-rich habitats support insects and other wildlife by providing resources such as food in the form of leaves, nectar, and pollen, as well as shelter and breeding sites.
Wildflowers are also useful in scientific and medical research. Some native wildflowers in the United Kingdom contain compounds that can be used in medications to help treat diseases. Foxgloves (Digitalis purpurea, for example) contain chemicals that are used to treat heart conditions. We may lose potential new medicines if we lose wildflower species. Just as important, wildflowers are beautiful and provide us with vibrantly alive habitats.
